All you have to do is find a small corner in space, and hide. Research like crazy so that any intruders can be dealt with swiftly. Guard both ends of any wormholes you find, and send out ships to get all 5 X's. Lots and lots of ships.. I once won using this method at turn 150, record time for me (also the first time I won).
