directX error, need step by step instructions please...

I have been a Moo addict since Moo1 but have never tried patching/moding and am generally not interested in it. I just want certain bugs fixed. Moo3 1.25 was working fine until I tried to install some of bhruic's patches and now I get a DirectX Surface Unavailable Error. I used to see it from time to time in Win XP but have never had a problem with Win7 until now. I have removed and reinstalled the game and got rid of the patches and everything works again but I really want those patches.

Here are the patches I am trying to install:
Stuck Tech
TechTurnsRemaining
Transport Disband
Visibility

I am hoping someone can provide a bulleted, step by step process for accomplishing this (or provide a location where someone was already written one.)

copy the exe to a new name
(liky clean-moo3.exe)
and then patch the moo3.exe
or a new copy (test-moo3.exe)
if you dont like the resolts just delete the new exe and use the old one
no need to rename bifor running
you can run the clean-moo3.exe and the game will runn fine

a posebel reason for the error is that some patches need modification to the files in the game (Visibility)
i think its best if you do a copy of the game dir (copy moo3 to base-moo3)
then install strawberry and replays the moo3.exe whit an exe that you made that will only have the patches you want

Ok, I have:

created new folder
copied all Moo3 files into new folder
downloaded and unzipped into the new folder both Strawberry 1.1 and 1.2.1

are the patches now installed or do I have to run the patcher.exe?
How do I just use the patches I want?

I think I am doing things right ... :s

I created a copy (copied entire Moo3 dir to desktop)
Unzipped both Strawberry mods to that directory
deleted patch files that I don't want
using Bhuric's patcher.exe I patched each individual patch to the copied .exe
Got an incompatable dll error when I tried to patch the ones that require the dll file.

launched game, get to choose race option and directX error consistently.
Before running patcher game was running but only change was the texture. When I tried to select a different size of galaxy only a few options were available and when i tried to change the # of AI players I started getting directX errors.

I am missing some step. Again, if the response could be given as to if an idiot I would appreciate it.

try first whit no changes
if it works then the problem is whit the making of the new exe

Once I unzipped the berrys into to copied Moo3 directory the game did play w/ new sound effects and new graphics but I couldn't tell the other fixes (mainly the ones I mentioned) were working.

its hard to tell
most of them dont sow unless you test the game

i didnt increase the number of galaxies if you want to use one of the extras you can start a new game using the berrys exe
save it and exit
then run the new exe and load the game
