It can be done.
You need to add the new planet images in this folder Master of Orion 3/GameDataSets/Classic_01/GameAssets/Common/Graphics/Planets. By the way, you might need to extract graphics.mob so you can see the original ones in order to use them as model, unless you use a mod that has them already out. Anyway the new planet named, for example, PISNSSBarren24 gotta be made of two images of its surface, sized 720x180 and 360X90, named big image PISNSSsomething24.png and the small one PISNSSsomething24_s.png. Ok next phase. After making this 2 images go at terrainmaps spreadsheet located, if you use a mod, in this folder Master of Orion 3\GameDataSets\Classic_01\GameData\Common\Spreadsheets or if it's not, extract it with winrar from spreadsheets.mob, make the folder at the address i wrote and place the spreadsheet in it. Now for the last part: open terrainmaps.txt with excel for easier editing, go at terrainfiles table, insert a new row before tableend, number it, then write PISNSSBarren24 in one of the column/columns corresponding the environment of the new planet, and fill the rest of blank cells with the copied name of an original world from its column. I gotta stress again that you should really have the original images for reference and also look at the terrainmaps table that shows how the planet images correlate to the temperature and atmosphere density of the planet. Hello, I have renewed the planets, linking them to the images of atmospheres and modifying the terrainmaps for a better visual outcome of the set.
If you like can use it freely for your mod. Link: http://www.mediafire.com/?2vffrv094qwu9fd Excuse my english |

Cool, do have screen shots of them? And maybe see if you can get them hosted in the mods archive section here?

Awesome
I would say that in the first file you put up for download, your 'terrainmaps.txt' was in the ....\GameData\Common\ directory instead of ...\GameData\Common\Spreadsheets one, so might prove an issue, and may need checking in the new link? -------- EDIT: Yep i just checked, your 'terrainmaps.txt' in the latest download needs a 'Spreadsheets' folder added to hold it in (or it will paste to the 'Common' directory). -------- And a question about the differences in your 'terrainmaps.txt', yours is 'less full' than the original, and seems to have a large section of the AtmosphereFiles section missing ('x' in place of the texture)? Is there a reason for this? (maybe the version differences in Moo3?) As it is i'm currently using my default GoG Moo3.exe (patched up in my list in my other thread) version of 'terrainmaps.txt' with most of your new files (i've combined them, need to do more as well on this) and that seems to work ok, as in i'm seeing your new textures (not sure if all of them)? Does anyone know the limits on planet skins and atmosphere? Can you keep adding more indefinately, do you have to make changes in 'terrainmaps.txt' for them to show etc? ---- Edit: ok i see Dymoon gave some tips, and i'll see what more detail i can dig up. ---- There are no notes in that txt file, so knowing how it works might be really useful! Do you start with a very his res pic, then resize that down to the 720 x 180 and 360 x 90 templates? I notice your work often looks much more detailed than many of the default textures for example? Thanks for your insights on this. And again thanks for your effort nadia911, you made some really beautiful looking skins in your mix, i'm using them (and crediting you) in my mod build This post has been edited by Zak2012 on Oct 16 2012, 01:25 PM |

Thank you for your words
I have attached files of atmospheres along with planets skins to force a more accurate and realistic junction, which is why the file terrainmaps figure x in the atmospheres section. Needless to add the file terrainmaps to the file Spreadsheets.mob, since the game first reads the txt from the Spreadsheets folder, or at least that I could see... To further expand the number of planets is necessary to amend the first section of terrainmaps.txt, adding more columns, however the limit would be 12,000 skins!! Compare the terrainmaps file original and mine and notice the differences I have taken images to 4096 x 1024 of resolution and I have reduced maintaining the amount of PPP. Thanks again, if you need some extra help for the graphical part of your mod, tell me Regards Excuse my english |

Yes i think i see. I know the various rows (1-8 for 'TerrainFiles', 1-6 for 'AtmosphereFiles') have a relation to planet atmosphere types etc, so it was that exact detail i will look for, and things like what the naming convention means, 'PIANSSBlue3' compared to 'PISNSSBlue4' etc in relation to that planet atmosphere data/composition etc. I might find those details in The Orion Sector site, or on the Atari modding forums when they come back online?
Oh no, sorry to confuse you! You never want to add anything to 'Spreadsheets.mob' (or any .mob file!) as this can mess the game up. But most mods will have un-zipped a number of the .mob files, so you end up with a non .mob folder called 'Spreadsheets' and in that most of the games .txt files are stored and read from by the game. So all i'm saying is in the format your downloads provide, they are missing the 'Spreadsheet' (non .mob) folder. So for most people that have mods/or want to mod, their 'terrainmaps.txt file is likely in(unless Spreadsheets.mob has not been un-zipped): ....\Master of Orion\GameDataSets\Classic_01\GameData\Common\Spreadsheets rather than: ....\Master of Orion\GameDataSets\Classic_01\GameData\Common I'm not sure which file would take precedent (yours might? it being seen first?), but probably having two files named the same is best avoided? I simply created a new folder in your 'Common' folder, called it 'Spreadsheets' and moved the 'terrainmaps.txt' file into it, so when i copy/paste it over to my main game directory it goes into the correct folder and over writes the old file already there. All your artwork files (in Planets folder) are all fine and point to the same default directory as mine. ....\Master of Orion\GameDataSets\Classic_01\GameAssets\Common\Graphics\Planets
12,000! cool
Yeah your skins look much higher resolution than the default textures, i'm slowly going through all the files and trying to work out/understand if it is possible to kind of make an all inclusive mod that uses the best examples of everyone's textures, but that is for a much later stage once i understand the 'terrainmaps.txt' fully. And THANK YOU, for your great effort and i certainly will be including your skins in any future mod i put together (early days!), and i'm currently using quite a few of them, and am in the process of adding more. Thanks for the offer of advice/help on the graphical modding side, i'll take you up on the offer for sure, but for now you probably need a well earned rest |

Nadia, just a quick question, would you mind if i did some small tiny changes to some of your planet skins? If i was to use them in a mod release they would all be credited as yours of course, and remarked over which ones i had changed a little.
I ask because i'm finding that 99.9% are amazing, a huge improvement, but for example: PISNSSGas22.png - has a number of storm clouds that are very uniform in appearence (all along the bottom(top?) hemisphere), so i've moved them (Clone Stamp in PS) around a little to look less uniform. PISNSSGas17.png - is very 'straight', so i've added some 'wave' lines to it's texture. PISNSSGas12.png+PISNSSGas15.png - i've changed the colour scheme a little. Things like that. Now is that ok with you? If not let me know, and if you are ok with it, shall i carry on the process of taking notes of the changes i'm doing to document later in the associated readme file etc? Heh! And i'm still trying to get my head around how to patch as many planet skins together to be used by the game 'correctly' for atmosphere type etc. But i'm getting ahead of myself! I'm still going through all the awesome +500 texture files you gave us the other day!!! |

No problem Zak, anyway, if you need it I have many more images available for use (800 or 1000) but we need to convert at the format of the game.
I joined the atmospheres images with the planets skins because, many times, the game was a mixture of both images resulted in an unpleasant or unreal view. When you finished with fixes let me know in a readme file for the corresponding corrections, feel free to do all that you create convenient. Regards Excuse my english |
